Badham Delvings
Peter Badham's book about the surname origins and history was published in May 2007.
Awarded first place in the Book category of the Guild of One-Name Studies publications Awards 2009.
Badham Delvings is a unique compilation for those interested in the origins, history and development of the Badham surname. Combining fact, research and biography, it represents decades of work by the author and many others.
From 13th-century ap Adam beginnings in Gwent and the Welsh March, the book charts 700 years of family dispersion and migration around the world. The state of current research and knowledge is explored as well as suggestions for future directions for information gathering and research. Placing the development of the surname firmly in the context of local and national history, the author tells the stories of some of its key figures in an attempt to weave a colourful tapestry of Badham lives. Some of the topics covered are:
Where Badhams were found ● Early Welsh roots of the surname ● Badham surname variants ● Distribution from Gwent into Herefordshire ● The feudal context and disentangling genealogies ● West Country ap Adam migrations ● The West Wales enclave and Irish connections ● Across the pond to USA and Canada – Black Badhams, Mormon Badhams, Hereford cattle ● Hereford to the Antipodes – the Badhams of Essex, Suffolk and New South Wales ● Medieval lawyer and chronicler Adam Usk ● Walter Badham, Groom of Henry VIII’s Chamber ● Badhams on both sides of the law ● Letters, 1741–53, of companion Elizabeth Badham, daughter of smuggler John Badham.
240 pages, 20 x 25.8 cm, highly illustrated with more than 60 maps, photographs and period topographical prints, about half of them in colour. With personal-name index, place-name index and a glossary.

"This is a well laid-out book with an effective use of colour for the maps and illustrations. The subtitle gives you an idea of what to expect and, on the back cover it does not need to state that it is the culmination of 50 years' research because that is obvious as soon as you delve into the book. From an in-depth study of the 1881 census illustrated with the Surname Atlas software, the author takes the research back to the 11th century, when Badhams owned land in the Welsh marches...........The opposite of a coffee table book, this strikes one immediately with its scholarly approach. It is a fascinating book which well merits study in detail. I fully recommend it."
